The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), a non-profit international centre of excellence in fluid
dynamics located in Belgium, seeks applicants for the position of CEO.

The missions of the von Karman Institute are:

  • To promote training of scientists and engineers from NATO countries, through setting-up
    dedicated, high-level educational programmes,
  • To contribute to the dissemination of advanced knowledge,
  • To undertake, instigate and promote studies and research,

In theoretical, experimental and numerical fluid dynamics, in an international, multi-cultural
environment.

As center of excellence in fluid dynamics, the VKI operates in an international atmosphere to promote intercultural understanding and to strengthen the links between researchers. The VKI is a focal point for advanced training and research in aspects of fluid dynamics judged important by the NATO authorities.

Through its research, the VKI contributes to the economic development and the innovation capacity of Belgium, its regions and Communities, the NATO Nations and the international customers. The VKI counts 100 employees and researchers. The institute attracts each year around 65 candidates for its doctoral programme in addition to the 35 students following the research master educational programme (master after master level).

The main responsibility of the CEO is to ensure the continued excellence of the Institute’s teaching and research programmes by providing effective leadership as well as administrative and financial management. Capabilities in changing the VKI towards a professional project management organization is a prerequisite. He/she will be responsible to and receive general policy guidance from the Institute’s Board of Directors. Three senior members of the management team support the CEO.

Candidates for the CEO function of VKI have to fulfill the following essential requirements:

  • University degree and affinity for the domain of fluid dynamics
  • Multi-year management experience at high level
  • Knowledge of the international context in which the VKI functions
  • Fluent in English
  • Excellent contactual qualities

Understanding of the Belgian scientific and technological infrastructure, in particular in the aeronautics
and space domains, the ability to operate in both a commercial and public environment and sufficient
knowledge of the two languages of the host-country (French and Dutch) would be considered as an asset.
The CEO will serve five years. The mandate is renewable. The remuneration package will be in accordance
with the responsibilities. The targeted starting date is 1 January 2018.
